New drug for type 2 diabetes on the horizon

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) is a natural hormone involved in controlling blood sugar levels. It stimulates the release of insulin only when blood sugar levels become too high. In people with type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 secretion is often impaired.

The pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk is developing an analogue of this drug to be taken orally in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, its release is likely still a few years away.

Parkinson's disease

If patients being treated for Parkinson's disease were to have a sudden or significant reduction of their dose of medication (dopamine agonist), they could develop "dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome". This can occur with reduced doses of these drugs such as pramipexole (Mirapex) or ropinirole (Requip). The symptoms are similar to those experienced by addicts in withdrawal: anxiety, panic attacks, pain, and/or dizziness.

Alzheimer's treatment

A common drug, currently used for high blood pressure and heart disease, angiotensin receptor blocker, was recently found to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. This was according to research published in the British Medical Journal. It may also be effective against diabetes and strokes.
